Nursing is one of the Departments of Faculty of Health Sciences at RIU. Nursing was much needed in RUSIZI district like elsewhere in the country and region. Most nurses in this areas had only completed their secondary school level long ago. Furthermore, the majority of nurses working in health sector in Western province studied in the DRC or and BURUNDI where the programs and contexts are different.

Overall the aim of the program is to educate registered nurses who will competently perform clinical, management and leadership, teaching and research as outlined in a scope of practice by Rwanda National Council for Nurses and Midwives by using critical thinking and problem solving skills to respond to the needs of the society. This program is urgently needed to assist the government of Rwanda in solving the problems related to the serious shortage of nurses. Graduates of the program will be competent on the labor market at the national and international levels in dealing with the demands of the present society characterized by rapid changes and sophisticated technologies.

Faculty of health sciences is currently much involved in community activities, where students and Faculty staff ( clinical instructors),  help the community members in improving their lives .

this is done mainly targeting vulnerable or risky population, for instance under five years children, old people, pregnant women and adolescents. The groups normally experience health conditions such as malnutrition, sexual transmitted diseases , pregnancy complications when there is no follow up made by health professionals.
